Marques on Black Cab!

So Just found out that Marques got his own Black Cab Session! Super proud.

We don't have a long history, but he lived in St. Augustine for a few years and was a usual suspect at the guy's house on Kieth Street, back when that was the place you went after classes and on the weekends. He was naked a lot of the time and was fond of sandwiches and paid rent for quite awhile by playing violin on Hypolita for spare change.

Two years ago he moved to NYC and has since performed with Grizzly Bear, TV on the Radio, and Dirty Projectors. He travels to England all the time and has pretty much made it as a performer.

So while I'm not a close friend, I feel like I know him well enough to be like "HEY I KNOW THAT GUY".

All I can think about recently is the night last summer when my family and I slept under the stars in the middle of a field in Zion National Park. Let me tell you, there is absolutely nothing like the deafening roar of silence you hear in the wilderness. Staring at thousands of stars, stationary and shooting. Just in your sleeping bag. Gets ungodly hot during the day but chilly at night. The smell of wet grass surrounding you in the morning. Ohhh so good. I wish I was back there right now.

I've spend a fair amount of time in national parks in the west (California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada) and I haven't found anything more satisfying than being completely isolated from everything I've ever known.

Even more of a sign that I need to move out there sometime soon. Oregon might be a little ways off, but a 5 hour bus ride for some national park'n would beat a 3.5 hour flight with 8 hours of drive time any day.

I live for those singular minute instances of mutual understanding with complete strangers. Connecting on a most basic level. Eye contact for half a second. In the right moment with the "right" person you can convey the most honest of emotions in a fraction of a second with a lone facial expression. It happens once in awhile, but each time it does I'm left thinking about it for days. There's just something about that kind of experience that stirs the metaphysical in my head.

So far there's only Starálfur and Kingsley, but we gladly welcome Klaus to the family.

Setting aside work-work for the 4 freelance clients I'm working with right now. I get so wrapped up during the week I tend to get get tunnel vision and oversee projects which need my attention. Sorry for the neglect, I'll be making it all up soon.

I think tonight might be a bike downtown night. I feel like getting out and moving around. Vehicles are wonderful but I'm feeling like I haven't used my body for active purposes in over a week. Gah.

Just let people talk, listen to what they have to say, know when to stop listening. Do whatever you want to do and do it for the right reasons. Wear what you want to whenever you want to. If you border too close to a stereotype well tough shit because there are way too many to avoid all of them. It's inevitable that you're going to be associated with one, just stay out of the center of it and mix shit up every now and again. If you were devoid of all stereotypes you'd be wearing a potato sack in the woods. And I bet even that has it's own stereotype out there somewhere. There are those who live and breathe their fashion and choices of style and there are those who accept that they're going to dress like other people in the world and spend their time with more contemplative and lofty pursuits.

I have this box where I keep every physical note ever written to me. They come from everywhere and they're written on everything. I have at least a hundred. Looking through and reading handfuls of them was pretty cool. I have drunk notes, foreign notes, birthday cards, "just wanted to say hi" letters, love letters, postcards of every origin, post it note scribbles, back-of-receipt "I'm stealing your pen and a cigarette" notes, and every other kind. One at a time, they come off as kind of random and disposable, but after collecting them for years and looking through them for an hour it's apparent I have amazing, supportive, passionate friends and relatives. It's not so often I just think back and say "My life is and has been so good" because I'm always dealing with the present and its issues, but really I'm very lucky. Today has been brought to you by nostalgia. I hope I see everyone who is reading this sometime soon, because I miss all of you and would rather be talking with you than doing anything else.

Best solstice ever! Because I remembered it was the solstice. Today has consisted of:

1. Dressed in my best work clothes, felt really good about it.
2. Venti Americano at Starbucks.
3. Everything with cream cheese and tomatoes at Einstien bagels.
4. Good, productive day at work. A lot of positive stuff going on.
5. Bike ride to celebrate the solstice:
A. Went downtown and cruised around there
B. Went to Park Ave to get the Microphones "The Glow pt. 2" They didn't have it but the woman at the counter had one copy
which had been on hold for a month and sold it to me.
C. Went back downtown for dinner at Pizza Planet. It was only me and the workers and they were pretty entertaining.
D. Rode until it got dark.
6. Had a good talk with mom.

And now I'm back home, sooper excited to listen to that new album. This day has been one to remember.

I need to begin working on something that takes me more than 5 minutes to draw. Something bigger, with color. Not really sure what or what for. Maybe a stencil I can put at the top of my street. A stencil that says "KEEP GOING!" since people ALWAYS feel like they have to stop at that intersection even though they don't have a stop sign. Something that's functional in some way would be nice, something public that draws interest. Eh, we'll see. And by "we'll" I mean you and I, of course.

So I just submitted a design to Threadless. It's an old doodle, just re-drawn with a little more detail. Now that I see it on the site, it might come off as a little aggressive. It's funny to see how a stand alone doodle usually viewed by itself turns into a message directed at the person who is in front of the person wearing the shirt. Once "directed", it seems somewhat offensive, but whatever.

I do like the personality of the banners though. The rather quiet yet bold first one. The annoyed second one. And the sickeningly sweet last one that makes you want to punch it in the face. Vote if you'd like (though I know if it's been given the okay from the website yet. It should be available for your harshest criticisms in the next day or so.).

I'm most always accompanied by my ipod while on solo bike rides, which I tend to go on often. Sometimes I'm surprised by the mix of music my ipod selects while on shuffle and I thought it would be cool to post the hash-up of songs it selected tonight. It was an appropriate playlist, especially considering the conditions: fairly cool, empty streets, riding at a moderate speed around Lake Eola and a handful of times around the Howard track. Anytime I feel like blowing my own mind, especially after eating PBJs while watching Jerry Springer, I think of the orientation of our planet we've all become familiar with and have accepted as the "true" view of the way things are. But really there is no "up" or "down". We traditionally think of the Arctic as being "North" and the Antarctic as being "South", but it's all relative. We're floating in space. You can look at the ground, the sky, but once your far enough away that all seems less and less relevant. Everything radiates from the Earth's core and therefore when viewed from afar anywhere can be the northernmost apex of the planet. This view of the Earth is just as correct and and true as any other view you could imagine. Earth itself is just hanging out in the middle of the vast void of space. Isn't that cool?

Good things have been happening for the past two weeks. These things include but are not limited to:

1. School ended/installed all the final pages in my portfolio today. All done. Ready for a jorb.
2. Finally got over the end of the semester sickness a couple days ago.
3. Best smoothie ever at Crucial Coffee.
4. Best food ever at Present Moment.
5. Best movie watching experience ever at Pot Belly's.
6. Walked over the Bridge of Lions.
7. Made music with Travis.
8. Starting to drink a moderate amount of coffee each day.
9. Seeing lots of friends everywhere all the time.
10. Very nice weather. Mentioning weather is usually a cliche in lists of good things, but the weather has been exceptional and deserves recognition.
11. Finally obtained mug status at Fusion (received a 12 ounce iced glass mug versus a plastic 8 ounce cup. It's not something you ask for, the bartender decides if you're worthy and fills up the appropriate vessel when you order your $1 beer).

A couple good quotes from this afternoon. Amadeus, Dylan and I ran errands around town for an hour or so.

So on Sunday Travis and I drove to Miami to see a screening of Animal Collective's "Oddsac". The whole experience was interesting, to say the least. The drive was easy, but the venue was in a pretty dangerous part of town. We had a couple run-ins with local "residents" while we were trying to find parking and eat our PB&Js. We paid $5 to park in this lot "guarded" by a man with very few teeth who said he would be there until we returned. There were all these sky scrapers with marvelous lawns with terrains like some kind of MC Etcher drawings that apparently no one is allowed to touch. At all.
We decided it would be in our best interest to just go wait at the venue, so we did and were first in a line of a few hundred people. The venue itself was an industrial modern club with a huge dance floor filled with plastic chairs set up in front of a large screen. Naturally Travis and I sat front row center, the best seats in the venue hands down. The sound was incredible, the visuals were mind-blowing, and the experience as a whole was nearly indescribable. Because of where we were seated we were pretty much engulfed in this film entirely, which made everything so much more intense. It was so good though. So good.
We walked back to the car, drove for a few seconds, then pulled over on the street to find out how to get to my aunt's condo. All the sudden the guy who we paid to park stumbled up, under some kind of influence, and started telling us how we had to pay another $5 since we stayed after 7. There were no other cars in the lot, we were the only one the whole night, and apparently he had gone upstairs for a minute when we got our car and left. He didn't get violent, but he kept talking like he was about to pull out a gun and demand the rest of the money. There came a point where he pretty much stopped talking, so Travis and I took that opportunity to say "bye" and GETDAFUCK OUT OF THERE. We just left him standing on the corner.
We stayed at My aunt and Uncle's condo which was so wonderful. My aunt treated us like royalty: made us a full dinner, offered anything we could have wanted, let us shower and clean up, and everything. It was so great. We woke up the next morning, it was rainy and cloudy out, and had a quick breakfast before my aunt armed us with 8 double shots. We drove back to St. Augustine and got back around 5 or so.

Oh, yeah, because everything I've ever experienced up until this point has been some kind of easy-crusin' joy ride with no serious responsibilities or consequences. If you think getting hired for a regular 9-5 job and going to bed at 10PM every night makes my life more "real" then I'm not so sure you're milking your existence for all it's worth.

So far this semester I've drank at least 21.5 gallons of coffee/expresso. A little excessive but at the same time a little bit necessary. If coffee were gas I'd be able to drive 645 miles. I'd be able to drive to Memphis. Never been to Memphis but I've heard it's nice.

Step 1: Find a good, reasonably-sized frame in good view of the public. The more mediocre the original artwork, the more justifiable your revamp is.
Step 2: Create a piece which will fit in the confines of the matting.
Step 3: Carefully take down the frame, and inconspicuously disassemble it, putting your artwork in the matting and the original artwork behind it but still in the frame.
Step 4: Hang frame back on wall and walk away quickly (but not too quickly).

Tip 1: If questioned by security, simply tell them the piece was crooked inside the frame and you were just trying to straighten it. They'll have no choice but to believe you. This happened to me.
Tip 2: Make sure your piece is believable in the space, anything too crass or abrasive may call attention from the security guard who may or may not be questioning you. If there's reason to suspect the piece in the frame is not the original art work, they might call you out.

Eventually someone may spot your handily placed artwork. And if they do, they'll find the original artwork in the frame. No harm no foul, right? Right. Happy framing, friends.

So Liza and I just hid in the tiny tiny studio cabinets for a few minutes while security came through and cleared the building. Students have to leave by 1AM, but sometimes that's just when I hit my stride. Right now all the lights are out and we're in stealth mode, trying not to be too loud. I feel like I'm 7 and am trying to sneak into the kitchen after my bedtime for some cookies. That's the exact feeling I have, and I haven't felt it since I was little. Very nostalgic. Well, if I hid in cabinets to get some more design time in, I better get off the internet. L8R.
